¿Que Vola?, or “What’s Up?” in the argot of La Havana, is a unique musical project that brings together seven of France’s best young jazzmen with a trio of highly skilled Cuban percussionists. The brainchild of trombonist Fidel Fourneyron, ¿Que Vola? takes the magnetic power of sacred Afro-Cuban rhythms, with their invocations to African gods, and envelopes them in the poesy of John Coltrane. Brass and wind take the place of chants and voices in a trance-inducing dialogue with the deep rhythms of the bata drums. Experience their unique, raw, and captivating sound at this 15th anniversary celebration of the Nø Førmat record label.
Fellow Nø Førmat artist Koki Nakano opens the night with his intoxicating mix of pop, jazz, classical, and electro music. Enjoy the diversity and scope of the label’s work over the years with these magnetic performers.
Then, continue the celebration at Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola where ¿Que Vola? will be performing late-night sets, Thursday through Saturday.
Presented in collaboration with French Bureau Export and the France Rocks Festival
Paris based pianist, Koki Nakano, was born in 1988 in Fukuoka, Japan. He studied at the famous Toho Gakuen School of Music and then took classes at the prestigious Tokyo University of the Arts. Koki has composed numerous classical pieces for fashion shows and advertisement campaigns and has performed at major venues including the Stefánia Palace, The Louvre Museum, and the Maison de la culture du Japon. Inspired by European and Japanese classical music as well as jazz and electronic music, he released his first album, Lift, in 2016, which showcases his contemporary chamber music compositions. On June 27, Koki will play some of his favorite and new compositions.
¿Que Vola? means ‘What’s Up?’ in the musical argot of La Havana. It’s also the name of a unique musical project that brings together seven of France’s best young jazzmen with a trio of highly-skilled Cuban percussionists. Brainchild of trombonist Fidel Fourneyron, ¿Que Vola? takes the magnetic power of sacred Afro-Cuban rhythms, with their invocations to African gods, and envelopes them in the poesy of John Coltrane. Brass and wind take the place of chants and voices, in a trance-inducing dialogue with the deep rhythms of the Batá drums. The result is unique, raw, and captivating.
Nø Førmat! 15th Anniversary
“You never know in advance what you’ll fall in love with”
Since its creation in 2004, Nø Førmat! has evolved according to the principle of welcoming, without stylistic constraint, a variety of musical forms that reflect the wealth of our increasingly creolised and interrelated world. To celebrate its 15th birthday, Nø Førmat! has dreamed up an itinerant festival featuring, in five exceptional events on three continents and in five cities (Cully, London, Kinshasa, Lyon, and New York), some of the major names from its catalogue. It’ll be another way of affirming that music is a lot more than just a simple product one can market and spread by an algorithm. It’s also a universal language that offers human beings the chance to hear each other over and above their differences.
