In their characteristic style that is both reverent of the original and imaginative with its interpretation for contemporary young audiences, the celebrated Classical Theatre of Harlem delves into Sophocles' famous tragedy. When the young woman Antigone arrives in Thebes to discover that her brothers have been killed in battle, she is enraged that her uncle Creon—the city’s ruler—is refusing proper burial rights to one of them. Caught defying the king, she is imprisoned, leading to an uprising of the people. Carl Cofield directs this timeless play whose themes of power, loyalty, tyranny, justice, and the position of women in society continue to resonate strongly today.
