One can see such internationally renowned musical artists as conductor James Levine and pianist/singer Steve Ross, or award-winning theater artists like Cherry Jones, Alan Bennett, and Harold Prince. Legendary choreographer Katherine Dunham and leading dancers from such companies as Alvin Ailey and Martha Graham have all graced the Library stage. The Library has two galleries—the Donald and Mary Oenslager Gallery and the Vincent Astor Gallery—that feature free exhibitions on topics ranging from disco and vaudeville to the theater of Charles Dickens and a celebration of prima ballerina Margot Fonteyn.

The materials in its collections are available free of charge, along with a wide range of special programs including exhibitions, seminars, and performances. The Library sponsors orientation programs tailored for graduate school and professional training students each term, and offers internships for museum, library, and archival students.
