Italian music of the Classical Era perpetuated a long tradition of virtuosity in stringed instruments.  By the beginning of the 19th century, Italian violins, violinist-composers, and the violin repertoire had advanced to levels of flamboyance unrivaled anywhere else in Europe.

Nardini’s Violin Concerto was once a staple in the repertoire for all the great violinists.  Today, it is rarely ever played, perhaps because of its syrupy romantic sentiment.  In the hands of the superb violinist Krista Feeney, performing on gut strings such as Nardini knew, the concerto will have a sweetness that may have been lost in the late twentieth century.

Clementi wrote ten symphonies, none of which are heard today.  He was a highly respected contemporary of Beethoven, known as a virtuoso pianist with cosmopolitan tastes.  Italian born and educated, he made most of his musical career in England where he had access to a lively symphonic environment.  He conducted acclaimed performances of his symphonies in London and on the continent.

The famed William Tell Overture is known for the filigree repeated motives in the strings that mimic a horse’s gallop.  It is thrilling to hear these figures played on period instruments, with their lighter, more bouncy technique.  The early brasses make a blazing impression without covering the strings.
