The unique legacy of drummer and bandleader Art Blakey makes this tribute especially exciting—and even personal—for Wynton Marsalis and his handpicked group of young, up-and-coming jazz musicians.

In honor of Blakey’s centennial, Marsalis and company will play the music of his iconic mentor. Marsalis will highlight the sound that kept Blakey’s band, the Jazz Messengers, vital and popular across many decades, while also showcasing the next generation of musicians who will carry the art form forward.

It’s a fitting tribute to Blakey, whose band served as a launching ground for artists from Wayne Shorter and Lee Morgan to Terence Blanchard and Wynton Marsalis himself. Just as Blakey’s timeless music is essential to jazz, so is the tradition of mentorship and cross-generational collaboration. The next chapter is being written by Wynton Marsalis, Jeffery Miller, Zoe Obadia, Anthony Hervey, Philip Norris, and Abdias Armenteros.
