“You’re hard-pressed to find rising talents more exciting than Camille Thurman.” – The New York Times
“Vocally, she is equally adept at scatting breezily with just the right amount of surprise and soulfully expressing the most minute detail of a ballad in such a way that you can’t imagine any other direction the lyric might go. When she picks up the sax, it’s another vibe altogether: hearty, gutsy, fervid, sensual.” - JazzTimes
The multitalented Camille Thurman is a formidable saxophonist and a recent second-place winner of the prestigious Sarah Vaughan Vocal Competition. She has performed with artists ranging from the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis, Dr. Billy Taylor, George Coleman, Lew Tabackin, and George Benson to Chaka Khan, Alicia Keys, and Missy Elliot. Tonight, on International Jazz Day, she returns to Dizzy’s Club with the Darrell Green Trio to play music from her outstanding new album, Waiting for the Sunrise, featuring repertoire by Jimmy McHugh, Milton Nascimento, Hoagy Carmichael, Cole Porter, and Angela Bofill—as well as a few deep cuts that Thurman proves are just as timeless as the standards. Thurman is equally talented as a vocalist as she is a saxophonist, and her performances as a bandleader are the best way to experience the full scope of her artistry.
