Take a journey with this intrepid quartet that blends roots music and oral traditions from Mexico and Asia with contemporary music, free improvisation, and deep collaborative experimentation.
Founded in 2011 in the rice fields of Nanto, Japan, Cuatro Minimal includes singer and composer Juan Pablo Villa and guitarist Fernando Vigueras, both hailing from the contemporary music scene of Mexico City, the traditional Korean percussion master Chang Jaehyo, and one of Japan’s most respected world musicians, Sakaki Mango, who plays African thumb-piano and the gottan, a string instrument from Kagoshima region. Alongside the music, Mexico City–based visual artist Arturo Lopez “Pio” draws live monochrome images with ink and sand in this highly innovative project that presents a kaleidoscope of musical possibilities and a deeply expressive landscape of sounds.
Now in its 14th year, Celebrate Mexico Now brings New Yorkers an exclusive glimpse into how today’s Mexican artists reflect on and reshape Mexican identity in an evolving global context. The festival’s multidisciplinary nature yields a comprehensive cultural picture of the passions and preoccupations that make today’s Mexico so complex and fascinating.
Seating is available on a first-come, first-served basis.
