“What is the role for artists and the arts in creating and supporting places of refuge or safety, be it literal or symbolic?”

This year at The Laundromat Project, we are reimagining community safety by exploring the idea of “sanctuary.” Join us for a creative and immersive discussion moderated by Saeed Jones, award-winning poet and Executive Editor of Culture at Buzzfeed. Alumni from The Laundromat Project’s Create Change artist development program will discuss how they share and hold spaces that help us evoke, articulate, and realize our most creative and collective dreams of refuge.

The Laundromat Project believes art, culture, and engaged imaginations can change the way people see their world, open them up to new ideas, and connect them with their neighbors. When artists have the opportunity to build and contribute their unique skills and perspectives to the needs of their neighborhoods, they can be invaluable assets in furthering community well-being. When the skills and strategies for igniting creativity are made broadly available to everyday people and purposefully applied as tools for envisioning a new and better world, these can be powerful forces for positive, transformative change.
