Based on a novel by Jules and Jim author Henri-Pierre Roché, Two English Girls plays variations on François Truffaut’s earlier film’s ménage à trois: here, a young writer (Jean-Pierre Léaud) falls in love with two beautiful sisters (Kika Markham and Sylvia Marriott) at the start of the 20th century. In this delicate and witty romance, all the principals so cherish one another that nothing but sacrifice can eventuate, and only the passionate contemplation of emotion remains. The desaturated color was meant to invoke early two-tone Technicolor, apt for a belle epoque love triangle. An NYFF10 selection.
