Ben Webster: Ertegun Jazz Hall of Fame Celebration

Jazz at Lincoln Center

With saxophonists Jerry Weldon and Houston Person The votes are in, and now it’s time to celebrate the 2016 Ertegun Jazz Hall of Fame inductees! Tonight we honor legendary tenor saxophonist Ben Webster, an essential voice on the instrument, first known for his work in the orchestras of leaders like Fletcher Henderson, Benny Carter, and Cab Calloway. He then held an influential, long-term role in the Duke Ellington Orchestra and went on to collaborate with such artists as Art Tatum, Oscar Peterson, and Coleman Hawkins. For this celebratory performance, two top tenor saxophonists pay homage to Webster’s transformative work on the instrument. Leading the group is Jerry Waldon, a veteran of the New York scene known both as a bandleader and as an esteemed collaborator with legends such as Lionel Hampton, Joey DeFrancesco, and Mel Tormé. Tonight’s special guest tenor saxophonist is “soul jazz” standard-bearer Houston Person, recently featured in sold-out concerts in The Appel Room. Join us on this special occasion as these tenor titans and their band launch our 2016 Ertegun Jazz Hall of Fame induction celebration.
