On March 17, 2011, after Music Director Alan Gilbert and guest conductor Esa-Pekka Salonen addressed the audience, the New York Philharmonic performed Takemitsu's Requiem for String Orchestra, in sympathy and admiration for the Japanese people. For more information visit nyphil.org/japan

「こんばんは、アラン・ギルバートです。我々ニューヨーク・フィルハーモニックは、徐々に明らかになってきた日本の悲劇と危機の実態にショックを受けています。1961年にこのオーケストラが初めて日本ツアーを行って以来、いつも日本の人々の温かさに接してきました。日本にいるときは、日本人の団員だけでなく、すべての団員が故郷にいると感じ、友人に演奏をしているように感じます。いま全世界に、なんて自分達は無力なんだろう、という感情が広がっているのではないでしょうか。状況に連鎖的に手に負えなくなっている面があるからです。せめて日本の人々の心の支えになればと思い、日本の偉大な作曲家・武満徹の「弦楽のためのレクイエム」で今夜のコンサートを始めたいと思います。」
