Two-time Academy Award-winner Barbara Kopple ('Harlan County USA', 'American Dream') and Grammy-nominated R&B singer Sharon Jones discuss Kopple’s upcoming documentary 'Miss Sharon Jones!'
Often compared to the legendary James Brown due to her powerful, energetic performances, Sharon Jones is no stranger to challenges. For years she was kept out of the spotlight by a music industry that branded her, as stated in the documentary, “too short, too black, too fat.” After decades of working various jobs, from corrections officer to wedding singer, Jones had a breakthrough during middle age, joining forces with Brooklyn R&B group The Dap-Kings. Then, in 2013, on the eve of the release of the group’s much-anticipated album Give the People What They Want, Jones was diagnosed with a life-threatening illness. Miss Sharon Jones! Opens July 29 in theaters.
