Jazz at Lincoln Center
The Lessons from Our Masters series features a master of jazz alongside a multigenerational band. Tonight’s master is 2016 NEA Jazz Master Dave Holland in his first-ever performance at Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola! Holland is a famously versatile and expressive bassist who has spent a monumental career working with artists like Miles Davis, Chick Corea, Joe Henderson, Jack DeJohnette, and many more. He has also formed Grammy Award-winning bands, released dozens of albums as a leader, and won such awards as the Jazz Journalists’ Association’s Musician of the Year. Tonight he joins powerhouse drummer Nate Smith, a regular bandmate of his who organized this new trio. Also featured is saxophonist Jaleel Shaw, one of Smith’s regular collaborators. Every member of this trio is exceptional, but the rare appearance of jazz icon Dave Holland makes it a lesson from a true master that should not be missed. With drummer Nate Smith, bassist Dave Holland, and alto saxophonist Jaleel Shaw.
