Jazz at Lincoln Center
With tenor saxophonist Abraham Burton; trumpeter Josh Evans; pianist David Bryant; bassist Peter Washington; and drummer Eric McPherson Celebrating Dexter Gordon on what would be his 94th birthday, an all-star lineup will play the music from his classic Homecoming and Sophisticated Giant albums (Columbia Records) as well as some of the iconic ballads that made him so unique. Dexter Gordon (1923–1990) is considered the first saxophonist to translate the language of bebop to the tenor saxophone. He was nominated for an Oscar for his leading actor performance in the film Round Midnight in 1986. The 9:30pm set on February 26 will be a jam session with special surprise guests.
