Jazz at Lincoln Center
With pianist Aaron Goldberg, bassist Yasushi Nakamura, and drummer Kendrick Scott “A post-bop pianist of exemplary taste and range” – The New York Times on Aaron Goldberg “His sound is one of the most recognizable and unusual in jazz – light and airy, yet as visceral as the kettle drummers in Times Square.” – The New York Times on Leon Parker Pianist Aaron Goldberg is a mainstay of the New York jazz scene who has worked with such diverse and forward-thinking musicians as Joshua Redman, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Wynton Marsalis, Omer Avital, and Guillermo Klein. He’s also been a prominent bandleader and composer, particularly as a trio leader. Tonight’s performance is an exciting collaboration between Goldberg, first-call bassist Yasushi Nakamura, and legendary drummer and percussionist Leon Parker. Made possible by the French-American Jazz Exchange, this partnership aims to “expand the sonic, communicative, and expressive possibilities of the piano trio setting, emphasizing a primary role for ‘body percussion’ and ‘body rhythm’ techniques, both in place of and in addition to the traditional drum set.” It’s the perfect group for such a task – virtuosic yet restrained, and grounded in jazz tradition while adding some cutting edge ideas to its boundaries.
