Grassella Oliphant

Jazz at Lincoln Center

The Lessons from Our Masters series features a master of jazz alongside a multigenerational band. Master drummer Grassella Oliphant kicks off this year’s series on his 88th birthday. This elder statesman played with Ahmad Jamal in 1952, Sarah Vaughan through the late 1950s, and released a couple of albums featuring heavyweights like Bobby Hutcherson, Clark Terry, and Grant Green. He then took a nearly 40-year hiatus from music before returning in 2010 as great as ever. Oliphant led a a week of Dizzy’s Club Late Night Sessions in May 2017, prompting Jason Olaine, Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Director of Programming and Touring, to say “this was one of the best—if not THE best—sets of music I’ve seen in Dizzy’s so far this year. Right up there at the top.” Join us for a festive evening of music as we celebrate Oliphant’s 88th birthday and launch the 2017 Coca-Cola Generations in Jazz Festival.
