Jazz at Lincoln Center
With tenor saxophonist Billy Harper, trumpeter Freddie Hendrix, pianist Francesca Tanksley, drummer Aaron Scott, and bassist Hwansu Kang “Harper's fivesome plays hardy, heady, expansive jazz rich in cascading dynamism and fervent soloing." – Hot House Billy Harper is an explosive tenor saxophonist and a distinctive hard bop composer. Since moving to New York in 1966, he’s been a mainstay on the jazz scene and has worked with a long list of the greats, including an ongoing role in the all-star band The Cookers. Harper also has a history of putting together some serious quintets of his own, dating back to 1975’s acclaimed album Black Saints and 1979’s Billy Harper Quintet Live in Europe (Fred Hersch’s debut recording). His new quintet is another powerhouse ensemble that eagerly takes on Harper’s fiery compositions. This one-night-only engagement promises to be a virtuosic display of Harper’s widely appealing, yet confidently edgy brand of bop.
