New York City's 5 Boroughs in 50 Songs
August 15th, 2015
Crossing New York City can often feel like travel on an international scale, with each neighborhood evoking a strong identity in both feel and sound. In these two playlists, veteran DJs Joey Carvello and Bill Coleman have handpicked songs they associate with the Bronx, Brooklyn, East Harlem in Manhattan, Queens, and Staten Island. The results are as eclectic as the city itself.
DJ Joey Carvello, a member of the Mobile Mondays! DJ crew and keeper of the disco purist Facebook page “That’s Disco Before Travolta,” blends hits of the late 70s and 80s with deep disco and house cuts to capture the intangible ambience of each borough.
DJ Bill Coleman, an influential tastemaker and owner of the Brooklyn-based music company Peace Bisquit, casts a wide net that pulls in salsa, dance hall, rap, and pop from the past five decades. Many of the artists on his list have called one of the boroughs home; others just have an enthusiastic following in these neighborhoods.
You can catch both DJs live during Lincoln Center’s Silent Disco tour (August 19–September 3), Joey in Staten Island and Bill in the other four.
