In this all-Brahms program, beloved pianist Emanuel Ax joins the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra under rising star Lahav Shani for the D-minor Piano Concerto, a majestic score born from the composer’s tumultuous personal life. The program concludes with Brahms’s final symphony, his Fourth, a dramatic pinnacle that still cuts close to the heart.

The Program

“A dazzling new conducting talent.”
– Seen and Heard International on Shani
“Shani directed the musicians with an acute sense of drama and flawless musicality.”
– Classic Toulouse
“A magnificent interpreter.”
– New York Times on Ax
“What certainly stands out is the enormous dynamic range of the RPhO, especially toward the quieter end of the scale. The orchestra can play magnificently loud when needed and yet stay completely transparent and diffuse.”
– San Francisco Classical Voice
