Cultural anthropologist and curator Derrick León Washington shares the sometimes overlooked, interconnected histories and cultures of these genres by highlighting the music, dance, community migrations, and activism that nurtured these three art forms from their roots to the present. Artists will demonstrate some of the movement to help illuminate the power and defiant joy of swing, mambo, and New York salsa. With special guests Carlos Mateu, Shana Weaver, Ben Rich, Akemi Kinukawa, Paula Carreira, Samuel Coleman, and Manny Vazquez.
