Mozart: Symphony 41 in C ‘Jupiter’
William Herschel: Oboe Concerto No. 1 in E-flat, with Gonzalo Ruiz, oboe
Johan Daniel Berlin: Concerto á 5 in A Major; CPE Bach: Symphony in B minor

Astronomical is the whimsical title for a concert anchored by Mozart’s Jupiter Symphony No. 41. An excellent oboe concerto by 18th century astronomer-turned-composer William Herschel contrasts the Mozart symphony. Oboe virtuoso and Juilliard professor Gonzalo Ruiz is guest soloist. C.P.E. Bach’s Symphony in B Minor is a fine example of his turbulent “empfindsamer stil”. Thomas Crawford describes Mozart’s last symphony, Jupiter, as the composer’s apotheosis. “The Coda to the Finale compresses the themes by stacking them on top of each other. The result is a frenzy of colliding sounds and speeds. Both frustration and exhilaration ensue in the final bars, giving this masterpiece the sense that Mozart needed to express the sum of his life altogether in one glorious coda.”
