Adolphus Hailstork Symphony No. 1

Dynamic conductor Thomas Wilkins leads the Mostly Mozart Festival Orchestra in a riveting program of music in dialogue with the Classical period, kicking off with the overture to Cimarosa's delightful opera The Secret Marriage. The virtuosic Xavier Foley showcases the vast capabilities of the bass in Bottesini's Double Bass Concerto No. 2, and shines as soloist alongside Concertmaster Ruggero Allifranchini in Foley's own double concerto, For Justice and Peace. In the second half, the finale from Fela Sowande's African Suite sets the stage for prolific composer Adolphus Hailstork's Symphony No. 1—a striking work that brings the influence of the Neo-Classical lineage together with nods to the Classical era.
