Premier coup d'archet
Mozart: Symphony 31 in D ‘Paris’
Beethoven: Symphony 6 in F ‘Pastorale’
Beethoven: Romance in G, with Augusta McKay Lodge, violin

The ACO opens its 39th Season with a Parisian flare. The phrase ‘first stroke of the bow’ refers to an orchestral technique used by the string instruments, whereby, all the musicians start with a precise tutti in unison. Mozart chose to start his Paris Symphony No. 31 with the fashionable device. At the 1778 premiere, the audience instantly broke into applause. Virtuoso violinist Augusta McKay Lodge is featured soloist in Beethoven’s elegant Romance in G for Solo Violin and Orchestra. Augusta is an award-winning historically informed violinist, enjoying a blossoming career as leader and soloist at a young age. She performs regularly with Les Arts Florissants. The concert concludes with Beethoven’s Pastoral Symphony, which is loved for its depictions of nature sounds. The ACO offers a fresh look at Beethoven’s vision by use of natural hunting horns, leather timpani, and 18th century Austrian woodwind instruments.
