Nelson González, a foundational figure in New York City’s Nuyorican music scene, has built a nearly half-century career playing the Cuban tres, a guitar-like instrument with three pairs of strings. Born in Vega Baja, Puerto Rico, González made his name as a session and live musician with the Fania All-Stars, Orquesta Harlow, Típica 73, and in a partnership with Danny “La Voz de Puerto Rico” Rivera. His distinct musicianship can be heard on Grammy Award-winning albums helmed by Gloria Estefan, Cachao, Tito Puente, and Eddie Palmieri. He has performed on national television with Paul Simon and Marc Anthony and starred on Broadway in The Capeman. For this David Rubenstein Atrium performance, González, backed by a superb band of New York-based Latin musicians, celebrates the release of his latest album.
