Formed in NYC in 1962, Orquesta Broadway emerged as one of the most important and enduring charanga ensembles in the U.S. At a time when Latin music was flourishing in the city, the group distinguished itself with the elegance, swing, and Cuban-rooted authenticity of its charanga format—built around flutes, violins, piano, bass, and Afro-Cuban percussion. Inspired by the traditional Cuban charanga orchestras such as Orquesta Aragón and Orquesta América, founders Eddy and Rudy sought to preserve the spirit of danzón, cha-cha-cha, and pachanga while adapting them to the vibrant energy of New York’s Latin music scene. The band quickly became a staple of the city’s Latin dance circuit, performing in clubs like the Palladium and in dancehalls where mambo, pachanga, and Latin jazz were in high demand. For more than five decades, Orquesta Broadway has toured internationally, bringing charanga to Europe, Latin America, and beyond. Today, Orquesta Broadway stands as a living legacy of Cuban dance music in New York, a bridge between the golden age of mambo and the contemporary salsa era. With Eddy Zervigón still leading on flute well into the 21st century, the band continues to embody the vitality of charanga music and its unique place in Latin music history.
